Philly Girl Giving Back

Philly Girl Giving Back
by Angelica Owens

“Every child is a story yet to be told.”

When I look at this quote, I think to my own trials and tribulations as a baby. On September 1, 1997, a baby girl named Angelica Lorine Owens was born at 1 pound 1 ounce at Temple Hospital three months before my expected birth date. During this time, I was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where the nurses took care of me. My lungs were underdeveloped, I had tubes everywhere to help me breathe. When no one else thought I’d make it, they kept fighting for my life. Even at 1 pound and 1 ounce, I still lost more weight. It was a miracle I survived. Throughout my years, I have gone back to my hospital to see the nurses that took care of me. For my senior project, I am publishing a poetry book. I will donate the proceeds to Temple NICU to thank them for saving my life.I plan to tell my story to the world that being a premature baby has pushed me to follow my dreams. I give my highest praise to my nurses. I will forever be a Temple Hospital NICU Survivor!
